A downloadable game

-"A long time ago, in a galaxy far away..." Or should we say: -"40 years ago, in an Atari game dev studio..."

Back in 1982, The Parker Brothers  released their first game, The Empire Strikes Back. The game was available on two popular gaming consoles at this time, the Atari 2600 and the Intellivison. The gameplay was pretty much the same on both machines, you flew the snowspeeder around on the planet of Hoth and fought huge AT-ATs. The Parker Brothers did create a game for the C-64 in 1983, but it was more similar to the vector game you could play on the arcades, and it did not have the name "Empire Strikes Back" in the title.  In 1988 the C64 game distributor Domark did release a game called "Empire Strikes Back", programmed by the developers in Vektor Grafix.  This version was also based on the Arcade version.

40 years later...
40 years after the Atari and Intellivision games were released, Megastyle is now proud to present to you: The Commodore 64 fan version of the original Parker Brothers game "Empire Strikes Back". We have tried to remake the Atari 2600 version into a Commodore 64 version, but also added our own touch to the game. In this version you have to protect the rebels power generators from the walkers - just like in the original Parker Brothers game. But on a the Commodore 64 you will have to survive 8 levels and face new enemies not seen in the Atari version. We have added cut scenes between each level, and if you are good enough you will reach the end sequence!

The download we share with you contains:
A digital Cassette version of the game (TAP format)
A digital Disk version of the game (D64 format)
An executable program file of the game (PRG format)
Digital instructions on disk (D64) or as a seperate executable file (PRG).

We hope you enjoy this free C64 game just as much as we enjoyed making it!

Very nice and fast shooter with lovely scrolling. Our German-language review can be found in our recorded livestream starting at 03:00:20. Subscription to our YouTube or Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂

Thank you for this, this is my tribute to the game...

awesome graphics, music & gameplay

how do i run this game? install it how to open PRG file?

you need to download the c64 image file and load it on an emulator.

when u say image file which one exactly and which C64 emualtor, when it comes to emulating retro home computers it is terribly confusing. thank you

Try the .dsk file on Vice. You can try it on a 64 Maxi or mini if you have one. I'll try it on my modded PSP Go under Vice.

The 64 Maxi rocks. Check out Sonic (REU).

Awesome game! Thanks guys!

Loved the game! I discovered it as I was reviewing the Atari 2600 game, one of my favorite Atari games of all time. It was a pleasant surprise, and it was the first time I actually felt inclined to check out the modern C64 development scene! I will have to check some of these other games out now!

This game is really awesome. Played the original version on my good old Intellivision (RIP). Thank's for the hard work and may the 4th be with you.

Schaut doch mal vorbei:

This is great Re-rlease of this game.  Kudos to you and hope you bring out more games like this.

Ship movement and flight speed should be slower, I think that detail would improve gameplay a lot...

So glad to have been the first website to give this a "release" feature. Such an incredible game, nice work to all involved

Congrats! Awesome work!

Thanks so much to everyone who worked on this, it's a great game, I'm having an absolute blast playing it

Brilliant conversion, thank you so much

The visual work here is just stunning! It doesn't really look like a C64, it looks timeless. What I mean is that adding more pixels and colors wouldn't really improve it. And that is very hard to do when you are going for a fairly "realistic" style.

Awesomesauce.

Epic level work here. Chefs kiss marks of excellence. Love it.

Amazing conversion.  Graphics beyond anything I'd associate with the C64.  Gameplay improves on the A2600 original.  Must play for fans of A2600's Empire or C64's Mutant Camels.

Thank you very much for this absolute cool game.

Thank you!!!! is amazing!

Awesome! Ever since I played the preview, I've been looking forward to making a longplay from it. And may the force be with you!

That's some impressive flying there, pilot! Maybe we made the game too easy! :D

No, definitely not too easy. As stated in the video description, I used savestates (and edited it afterwards in the video editing program). It's all about a YT playthrough video, plain and simple.

Phew! Good to know! It's hard to judge the difficulty level on these small projects, so glad to hear you're happy!

I think the difficulty is perfect. I recorded a longplay but I had to use three reloads to get through the whole game. It definitely punishes you for your mistakes, but also rewards you for doing some fancy flying.

Thanks, that's great to hear!

Amazing work!

My 8-year-old self has come back through the TARDIS, oops wrong franchise.

Amazing Game Port, Love it and thank you.

A great conversion of the Atari 2600 classic.  Great presentation and expanded gameplay mechanics.

Works great on my NTSC breadbin. Also works with my Kung FU Flash
